Madden NFL 11 Locomotion

Hey everyone, my name is Ryan Burnsides and I am the Lead Gameplay Designer for Madden NFL 11. I normally like to stay behind the scenes, but since Ian coaxed me into writing this blog post, I figured I should write some sort of introduction. I am a huge football fan (college and pro) and an even bigger fan of football video games. I started at EA as an intern at the San Mateo studio (now in Redwood Shores) on the wildly successful Future Cop: LAPD (I’m sure you have all played it) and when given the chance to work at any EA Studio after my internship, the choice was an easy one. I wanted to work on Madden and joined the Madden 2000 team in mid-cycle. At various times over the last 11 years, I’ve been a lead software engineer on NCAA, Madden, and NFL Street, focusing mainly on AI, gameplay, and animation. From Madden NFL 07 through Madden NFL 10, I was the lead software engineer for our Central Gameplay Group. This year I have shifted more focus to the design side and I couldn’t be happier in my new role. Now that you have suffered through that, I’ll get to the good stuff.

Madden NFL 10 was a pretty dramatic departure from Madden NFL 09’s emphasis on twitch control. We really focused on trying to make the game look and feel more like what you see on Sundays. In the end we did a decent job, but we found out pretty quickly that the tech we were using wasn’t giving us the control that we needed to match our vision. Things like acceleration, direction changes, and momentum were very difficult to tune and while the end result was a fun user experience, we knew we had to make a pretty dramatic change in our tool set to allow us to achieve our goals. Everybody is always asking EA to fix things that are at the bottom of the list instead of fixing things that should be at the top of the list.

    FOR EXAMPLE:

    (1) One of the things that I hated the most about this years madden 10 > How when you call man defense the rbs can get open in the flats. When in real football the guys that are responsible for the rbs are told gard who ever comes to that side that they are on. If this fixed then it will make the game more realistic and force people to only pass to the flats if he is really open becase the man that was garding that side is now blizing. Zone flat passing was a problem this year as well please fix this.

Focus on player progression please make it the way it was on playstation 2. Progression should be based on how well the player does on the seaon no potential. You know if a player they claim has no potential in real life but had a great season would be rated high in madden. Player progression needs to be fixed bad.

The thing I think needs fixed the most is the player progression through franchise mode. Currently players progress more their first few years. I dont like this. Players should progress through the years (Simulating learning) but they should also progress more through a certain amount of games rather then just years. Progressing more in the earlier games played and less after that. The reason for this is currently when you draft a rookie you cant sit him on the bench until your ready to use him (To replace a franchise quarterback or somthing down the road) because you lose that vital early progression period.

With Madden they need to change the options in challenging plays such as the "tuck rule", the spot of the ball, feet inbounds, etc.... When you go to challenge a play you do not get to choose what you are challenging. If there is a play with multiple fumbles and i go to challenge my fumble it will automatically choose the last fumble that happened. I would also like to see madden add in and update WR route running, the cuts are rounded off and the receiver never goes up to fight for the ball. I think i good jump ball feature is in order.

the only thing the people want is more advance plays offense and defense accept the wild cat it is in the nfl because it is effective and advance better blitzes and defenses make the game harder
